West University Place Homes For Sale
A small town nestled in America's fourth-largest city
Locals lovingly refer to West University Place as "West U" or "West University" and consider it an upscale yet family-oriented community. In terms of architectural style and history, West University has plenty of charm. One fun fact is that West University was founded by Ben Hooper, a former Tennessee Governor, in 1917, and the streets are named in homage to famous authors. There are still some remodeled 1930s cottages in this neighborhood and the popular Georgian Revival homesteads that are typically two stories, stately and traditional. Regardless, West University is one of the larger suburbs and boasts plenty of new construction for those who prefer more modern touches.
Many young professionals and families chose the area due to its proximity to Rice University, the Greenway Plaza in the city center, the Galleria shopping district, and the Medical Center. All of these places are major employers, yet they also provide all residents with everything from the highest quality medical care to elite shopping experiences. West University homeowners share many public spaces, such as the local recreation centers with the best pools and places to cool down during the summer. Many residents have degrees and relish the area's zoning that puts their children into public magnet schools or nearby private academies.
Certain areas in West University are within the walking district of the famous Rice Village ("The Village"), which has many entertainment options for families and endless luxury shopping. West University is also about 15 minutes away from The Galleria, which has plenty of designer goods and an indoor ice rink for those interested in avoiding Houston's hot summer weather. While many prefer to avoid soaring summer temperatures by spending time in West University's shopping centers, other options to relax in the hot season involve heading to the local private or public recreation centers. West U has two different ones, the private Colonial Park and the brand-new West University Place Recreation Center. The recreation centers have multiple swimming pools with the latest slides, outdoor pool designs, and sporting courts for avid tennis and racketball players. West University is surrounded by the best entertainment districts, but Little Matt's is worth visiting while in this neighborhood. Little Matt's is in the middle of the suburb and boasts the best salads as well as a candy room, game room, and other fun for every family member.

Some parts of West University are close to the Medical Center and nearer to employers in that direction, while other parts of town overlap with Rice University and the type of businesses bustling colleges attract. Simply spending time in the local districts and shopping around is a lavish experience, but West University also happens to have plenty of outdoor and recreational places. West University's top parks are Whitt Johnson Park, Wier Park, Friends Park, Colonial Park with some public areas, and Huffington Park. Except for Friends Park, which is more of a sculpted downtown area, the other small parks are very important to families. With over 5,000 households in this area, most families know it's important that children tire quickly of playground equipment and need more than one park. Between parks and shopping, there's a lot for young families, professionals, and people to do in the neighborhood in their spare time.
